Five Star Friday - The Killer Across the Table

This week's Five Star read was read by Jay!

42615534. sy475

Synopsis from Goodreads: The legendary FBI criminal profiler, number-one New York Times bestselling author, and inspiration for the hit Netflix show Mindhunter delves deep into the lives and crimes of four of the most disturbing and complex predatory killers, offering never-before-revealed details about his profiling process, and divulging the strategies used to crack some of America’s most challenging cases.
The FBI’s pioneer of criminal profiling, former special agent John Douglas, has studied and interviewed many of America’s most notorious killers—including  Charles Manson, ”Son of Sam Killer” David Berkowitz and ”BTK Strangler” Dennis Rader—trained FBI agents and investigators around and the world, and helped educate the country about these deadly predators and how they operate, and has become a legend in popular culture, fictionalized in The Silence of the Lambs and the hit television shows Criminal Minds and Mindhunter.
Twenty years after his famous memoir, the man who literally wrote the book on FBI criminal profiling opens his case files once again. In this riveting work of true crime, he spotlights four of the most diabolical criminals he’s confronted, interviewed and learned from. Going deep into each man’s life and crimes, he outlines the factors that led them to murder and how he used his interrogation skills to expose their means, motives, and true evil. Like the hit Netflix show, The Killer Across the Table is centered around Douglas’ unique interrogation and profiling process. With his longtime collaborator Mark Olshaker, Douglas recounts the chilling encounters with these four killers as he experienced them—revealing for the first time his profile methods in detail.
Going step by step through his interviews, Douglas explains how he connects each killer’s crimes to the specific conversation, and contrasts these encounters with those of other deadly criminals to show what he learns from each one. In the process, he returns to other famous cases, killers and interviews that have shaped his career, describing how the knowledge he gained from those exchanges helped prepare him for these.
A glimpse into the mind of a man who has pierced the heart of human darkness, The Killer Across the Table unlocks the ultimate mystery of depravity and the techniques and approaches that have countered evil in the name of justice.
Genre? Non-fiction, True Crime (Wait, what? A five star non-fiction book from Jay?!)

Backlist? Yes. Published May 7, 2019.

New to me Author? Yes.

Why I rated it 5 stars?  Even though I have anxiety, I'm a huge true crime fan. I used to fall asleep to episodes of Forensic Files every night. Getting this inside look into the minds of these serial killers was SO INTERESTING to me and my psychology minor brain.

The writing kept me interested and didn't read like a textbook, which is why I don't often read non-fiction. I really want to watch some Mindhunter and all those Netflix documentaries about Ted Bundy and the BTK killer. LOL

Five Star Friday - Let It All Burn

This week's Five Star read was read by Jay!

49983246. sy475

Synopsis from Goodreads: Darcie Weatherby has a full plate—a preteen and sixteen-year-old twins, a wayward grandmother, a nightmare boss, and a manipulative ex-husband. The last thing she needs is hot flashes.

Especially ones that start fires.

But like most single mothers, Darcie sucks it up and deals with it, because what else can she do? The kids need to be fed, her grandmother needs supervising, and her demanding boss needs placating.

Burning her boss’s house down was a total accident.

Honest.

It doesn’t take long before Darcie realizes she’s running on borrowed time. Unless she figures out a way to get these hot flashes under control, there’s a very good chance she’ll spontaneously combust at the Founder’s Day Masquerade Ball and leave her children motherless. There’s no way in hell—or Perry’s Fall, Ohio—Darcie will let that happen.

Never underestimate the determination of a mother.

Especially a smokin’ hot one.
Genre? Paranormal Women's Fiction

Backlist? No. Publication date is February 18, 2020.

New to me Author? Nope. I've read 20+ Denise Grover Swank books.

Why I rated it 5 stars?  Huge thank you to the author for allowing me to be part of her review team. All opinions are my own.

WOW! Denise Grover Swank never ceases to amaze me. I'll admit, when I first heard she was starting a book that was going to be "Paranormal Women's Fiction" I was like "No way. That can't be a thing." First of all, I don't normally like magical/paranormal/etc. reads. I like my reads to be realistic and something I can relate to. On that note, I also can't relate to an older woman, because I'm still in my 20s. BUT I WAS SO WRONG.

This book was absolutely fantastic. I'm always in awe of the way Denise (Yeah, I like to pretend we are on a first name basis) writes her characters so realistically so that while they are experiencing these crazy things happening to them, we feel it in our souls as readers. I loved Darcie and I loved how much she cared for her children. The "twist" at the end opens up a whole new avenue and I'm already on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book in the series (I hope it's a series). I NEED to know what happens!

If you haven't read a Denise Grover Swank book yet, you're seriously missing out. She writes stories so beautifully that I love them, even if they aren't my normal genre. I will literally read anything this woman writes. Thank you Denise Grover Swank! Thank you.

Synopsis from Goodreads: Love can redeem a man... but secrets and lies can condemn him.

A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past: once a teacher at a girls' prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart. But amid the rustic calm of ?Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets - and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegations. Now, at the center of a modern-day witch hunt, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers. to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him.

Genre? Literary fiction according to Amazon

Backlist? Yes. Publication date of April 3, 2001

New to me Author? Nope. I've read more than a few of Jodi's books.

Why I rated it 5 stars?  This book didn't suck me in right away, I had to wait about 100 pages, but then I was all in. I was committed; hook, line and sinker. I normally wouldn't give a book 5 stars that took me that long to get into, but I 100% did not see the twist coming. Jodi Picoult just has a way of writing that makes you want to keep reading up until the very last word has been consumed.

The Confetti Pact - ARC Review

Thank you to the author for the ARC of this story in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

The Confetti Pact by Lilly Bartlett

Synopsis from Goodreads: Nelly Roberts needs a fiancĂ© – fast!

When she’s left in the lurch with not just a wedding but also the country’s biggest magazine feature on the line, social media star, Nelly, has no choice but to substitute one groom for another. Luckily, Rafael Moreno Cortes needs a visa, so they make a deal: act the perfect couple for as long as it takes to get them both what they want. The catch? Absolutely nobody can know the truth.

With the magazine following their every move, Nelly’s ex re-emerges with a change of heart just as her pretend feelings for Rafael start to be anything but pretend. What could possibly go wrong?

Genre? Romantic Comedy

Release Date? February 12, 2020

New to me Author? Yes!

So, what did I think?

This book was super cute. We start off by meeting Nelly, an influencer who has her entire wedding planned out and ready for Instagram. The only problem is that her fiancé has decided that he needs some space. Wait, how's that going to look to all her fans?!

In walks Rafael, an attractive man who needs a visa so he can stay in the country. The easiest solution? Get married to a citizen. Check-mate! Together the two of them hatch a plan to get married so Rafael can stay in the country and Nelly can have her social media-worthy wedding. As long as nobody finds out, it's fine. Right?

Things seem to be going well, until her ex comes back on the scene. Does Nelly want to go back to the original plan of marrying him or is she starting to feel real things for Rafael?

This book was a fun, light-hearted read. It definitely reminded me of something Sophie Kinsella would write - and that was before I knew she blurbed it! It was a 4 star read for me and I would totally recommend it to anyone who wants a fun story to go in between their more serious reads.
